The Hohe Tauern national park After the last Ice Age, about 12.000 years ago, the Hohe Tauern National Park range was a desolate waste of rock and scree. The Hohe Tauern national park Animals and plants colonized this new habitat only very gradually – above all, species from the cold steppes of Central Asia, from the Artic region but also from Southern Europe. They followed the retreating glaciers up into the mountain region where today they form remarkable biological communities on the edge of life’s very existance.

In The Hohe Tauern national park there are Austria’s highest summits, the largest glacier areas of the Eastern Alps, and waterfalls belonging to the highest in the world. Numerous mountain meadows and pastures came into being as a result of long lasting hard work done by farmers high above the forest line.
