Vallingby New Town Garden in Sweden

Vallingby New Town Garden in SwedenVallingby New Town in Sweden was famed in the 1960s and 1970s for its landscape treatment. Designers admired the way in which elements of the natural landscape were incorporated into the urban fabric. During the 1980s a not dissimilar approach became known as ecological planting - and in the 1990s it became known as sustainable planting.

Vallingby New Town Garden was one of the pioneer projects for this approach. Today the social housing blocks, one might almost say 'socialist appartments' look rather sad and the small garden parks rather forlorn. They do not function like the agoras, forums or public gardens of capital cities.

Princess Mother Memorial Garden in Bangkok

Established in 1993, Princess Mother Memorial Garden Bangkok was the materialization of His Majesty, the King's wish to beautify the area around the Princess Mother, Sringarindra's childhood home in Thonburi. But when the project actually was initiated it was found that the Princess Mother's childhood home which was in a deplorable condition in her lifetime was no longer extant. But there were similar houses in the vicinity which the owners were ready to give up to help the King's project.

The Princess Mother Memorial Garden, Bangkok incorporates a replication of the house where she spent her childhood years. It is set in an open space with beautiful gardens enhancing the appeal of the place. There are two exhibition halls which display the photographs and mementos from the Princess Mother's life. The collection contains rare snaps like the one taken at the time when she was 14. The photographs are a sort of pictoral chronicling of the life of the princess. The second exhibition hall recounts her active life and her involvement with the various projects. It also features some of her personal items like the Buddha images that were sculpted by her for the royal family. There is a small shop adjacent to the reconstructed house that sells products manufactured by some of her projects.

Love Park to Open in Italy

Love Park to Open in ItalyA love park where passionate couples can romp freely is set to open in Italy. Many young couples in Italy find it hard to be intimate as high prices force them to live with their parents for longer.

Entrepreneur Giuseppe Foggetti is behind the park, in the southern port town Bari, where couples pay £2 to go in and another £1 for every half hour they stay.

He said: "My idea was to create a place for those that want to spend intimate moments together without thinking whether someone would be shocked if they saw it. I intend to offer security and privacy."

Zappion Gardens at Athens in Greece.

Zappion Gardens at Athens in GreeceThe Zappion Gardens at Athens in Greece, which are immediately south of the National Gardens, are much more formal. In fact, there is more concrete than lawn at the Zappion in Athens of Greece. There is a rather large road that passes through the heart of the gardens from Amalias Street to Koumbari Street. The good news is that the road is closed to vehicles, so the road is filled with walkers. Making the walk even more pleasant is that the road (as are all roads in the Zappion) is tree lined. There are even benches along side the trees so that one can sit and watch the world go by.

However, there’s enough in the park to see that sitting doesn’t seem like much of an option unless you are tired or not a tourist. The main site to see is the Zappion building in Athens of Greece. While it is an impressive building, we could never figure out for what it is used. Lonely Planet says that it is now used for some government offices. We did see a couple of armed guards patrolling the front steps. When Dianne tried to get a peek inside, one of the guards made it clear that she could only enter up to a point and then had to turn back.

The Zappion Gardens at Athens in Greece is a wonderful place to take a break from the urban grind that is Athens. However, the Zappeion Gardens are open 24 hours a day.

The park has over 50 km hiking trails, many of them formed by wildlife movement. Elevations range from 100 to 1400 metres. It is easy to get lost so it's recommended to hire a guide.
